The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced that fares for its special commuter rail service to Foxborough for the 2026 World Cup games will be higher than the usual pricing for Gillette Stadium events.
Uncertainty Over Final World Cup Ticket Pricing
MBTA Confirms Price Increase
MBTA General Manager Phil Eng confirmed the price hike during a press conference held yesterday at North Station. While confirming the tickets will cost more than standard event fares, Eng declined to specify the exact new price point.
Eng stated, "We have not finalized the price yet," when addressing reporters. The agency has remained notably quiet regarding the specific cost increase for the highly anticipated international soccer matches.
Context of Current Event Fares
Typically, roundtrip train tickets from Boston to Gillette Stadium for events like New England Patriots games or major concerts are priced at $20. This standard fare was recently increased to $30 for certain events.
However, reports surfaced last week suggesting that the World Cup fares could potentially reach "around or even more than $75." Eng would not confirm this figure on Monday but reiterated the tickets would cost "more than our normal pricing."
Justification for Higher Fares
General Manager Eng argued that the higher price reflects an increased "value" embedded in the World Cup ticket. This added value is not tied to the prestige of the event itself, which has not been held in the U.S. for over three decades.
Instead, the increased cost covers a more "robust" ticket. This enhanced ticket will permit individuals to utilize the entire commuter rail system on the day of their game. Eng explained this benefit, noting that passengers might be traveling from farther afield, such as "Rockport" or areas "farther west in Pittsfield, in that area."
