New ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ Arrives on Disney+
A new animated Star Wars series, Maul — Shadow Lord, is coming to Disney+ this spring. The series is set to premiere on April 6, 2026, with new episodes released weekly until the season finale on May 4.
A Villainous Lead and Potential for Longevity
Maul — Shadow Lord will be the first animated Star Wars series to feature a villain as its primary protagonist. This marks a potential departure from previous Disney+ Star Wars animated shows.
Creators Hope to Exceed Three-Season Limit
Speaking with Collider, series creators Dave Mau, Matt Michnovetz, and Athena Yvette Portillo discussed their ambitions for the show. While acknowledging the uncertainty, Mau stated, “…we want to make this stuff forever, but who knows?” Michnovetz echoed this sentiment, saying, “We’ll have to wait and see.”
Portillo emphasized the importance of fan reception, noting, “Hopefully the fans like it enough that they ask for it.” Previous Star Wars animated series on Disney+ have not surpassed three seasons.
What to Expect from ‘Maul – Shadow Lord’
The series is set one year after the events of Revenge of the Sith and follows Maul as he attempts to establish a criminal empire and find a new apprentice.
Key Characters
The story also centers around several other characters:
- Devon Izara (voiced by Gideon Adlon), a Twi’lek Jedi in hiding on the planet Janix.
- Brander Lawson, a local lawman.
- Two-Boots, Lawson’s droid partner.
Previous Disney+ Animated ‘Star Wars’ Series
Several other animated Star Wars series have debuted on Disney+ since the platform became the home for Star Wars content in late 2019. These include:
- The Bad Batch
- Star Wars: Tales
- Young Jedi Adventures
- Visions
None of these series have yet been renewed for a fourth season.
