Law enforcement agencies conducted significant search warrant operations across multiple businesses in Anchorage and the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley on Wednesday, targeting an investigation into suspected sex trafficking activities. The multi-jurisdictional effort involved the coordinated efforts of the Anchorage Police Department, the Alaska State Troopers (AST), the FBI Anchorage Field Office, and other law enforcement bodies, as detailed in a statement released by the Alaska State Troopers. The focus of these warrants was on seven establishments identified as illicit massage parlors, which were systematically searched as part of the ongoing investigation. During a press conference held on Thursday, Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case articulated the department's forward-looking strategy, expressing a commitment to collaborate with state and local officials to enhance the effectiveness of future investigations into such criminal enterprises. Chief Case highlighted the inherent challenges posed by cash-intensive businesses, explaining how their operational structure can inadvertently facilitate illicit activities by providing a degree of discretion. In addition to the business premises, two residential locations were also subjected to search warrants. The operation resulted in the apprehension of seven individuals who are now facing charges related to their alleged involvement in these activities. The individuals arrested and the specific charges they are facing are as follows: Xiong Xiaotian, 40 years old, is charged with second and third-degree sex trafficking. Hui Zhang, 44 years old, is also charged with second and third-degree sex trafficking. During the press conference on Thursday, Commander Tony Wegrzyn of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation provided further details, stating that a total of 11 victims were identified and recovered during Wednesday's operation. Notably, none of the recovered individuals are residents of Alaska. Commander Wegrzyn also clarified that the arrests made thus far do not signify the conclusion of the operation, as investigators are actively continuing their work to identify and engage with any potential victims. Those identified as potential victims have been offered comprehensive support services and resources, facilitated through partnerships with governmental and non-profit victim service organizations. Colonel Maurice Hughes of the Alaska State Troopers revealed that this extensive operation was initiated following a protracted investigation spanning approximately one year. He indicated that additional charges may be brought forward as the investigation progresses.
