Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming film, The Bride!, promises a bold and fresh interpretation of the classic Frankenstein mythology. This new sci-fi horror creature feature centers on the Creature’s quest for love and connection, setting a unique tone for the iconic story.
A New Vision for a Classic Monster
The narrative transports audiences to the 1930s, where Christian Bale stars as Frank, who is actively seeking companionship. Jessie Buckley plays Ida, whose life becomes pivotal to Frank’s journey following a tragic incident involving the mob.
This setup establishes the foundation for Gyllenhaal’s distinct perspective on the origin story of the Bride character. To celebrate the film’s upcoming digital debut, an exclusive featurette highlights the design process for Frank and how Bale embodied the role.
Shaping Frank: Humanity Over Stylization
In the featurette, Director Maggie Gyllenhaal details her approach to shaping both Frank and the Bride. She aimed to maintain the Creature’s frightening elements, including his signature forehead staples, while ensuring he remained grounded in humanity.
Producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff confirmed this vision, stating, "That was Maggie's mandate from the beginning." She elaborated that the goal was to portray him as "a man who was reinvigorated and put back together in a monstrous way," a quality evident throughout the film.
Differentiating Frank and the Bride Through Design
The exclusive content also explores the design differences between Frank, created a century prior, and his intended Bride. Special effects makeup designer Scott Stoddard discussed how age factored into the makeup application.
Stoddard noted, "We realized that certain elements of his make-up were going to be 100 years old from when he was first put together. Some of the scaring was going to be older than others." This detail effectively underscores the character’s long history.
Furthermore, Annette Bening, who plays Dr. Cornelia Euphronious, points out the strange decision by the Creature’s original maker to construct him in separate pieces.
Giving the Bride Agency
The Bride! revisits a crucial aspect of Mary Shelley’s original lore by finally giving the Bride a voice. In the original The Bride of Frankenstein, the character famously remains silent, which was a major impetus for Gyllenhaal to create this new film.
Gyllenhaal’s adaptation centers the Bride’s perspective, granting her agency and allowing her to exist independently. She is portrayed as having a life of her own, rather than simply serving as a counterpart to the Creature.
Audiences can experience The Bride! when it becomes available on digital platforms starting April 7.
