Netflix subscribers can now enjoy Madagascar, the popular 2005 animated film from DreamWorks Pictures featuring the voices of Ben Stiller and Chris Rock. The movie officially began streaming on the platform today.

About Madagascar

Directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath, Madagascar was co-written by Mark Burton and Billy Frolick. The film follows four pampered animals from New York’s Central Park Zoo who find themselves unexpectedly shipwrecked on the island of Madagascar.

Star-Studded Cast

Alongside Stiller and Rock, the ensemble cast includes David Schwimmer as Melman, Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria, Sacha Baron Cohen as King Julien XIII, Cedric the Entertainer as Maurice, and Andy Richter as Mort. Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Bob Saget also lend their voices to the animated adventure.

Box Office Success and Franchise Expansion

Despite receiving mixed reviews, Madagascar proved to be a significant box office success, grossing approximately $558 million worldwide. This commercial triumph led to the development of a multimedia franchise.

The franchise currently includes two direct sequels and a spin-off film, Penguins of Madagascar, released in 2014. Collectively, the Madagascar film franchise has generated over $2.2 billion in worldwide revenue.

Beyond the Big Screen

DreamWorks Animation has expanded the Madagascar universe beyond feature films. Animated spin-off series include Nickelodeon’s The Penguins of Madagascar, Netflix’s All Hail King Julien, and Peacock’s Madagascar: A Little Wild.

“Move it! Move it! 4 pampered animals from New York’s Central Park Zoo find themselves shipwrecked on the exotic island of Madagascar, and discover it really IS a jungle out there! Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith lead an all-star cast of hilarious animals, including four mischievous penguins and legions of lemurs. It’s a film that you’ll go wild for again and again,” reads the official synopsis.
