Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has officially confirmed that current Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will serve as his running mate for the general election scheduled for October.
Lula, an 80-year-old leftist leader, faced internal pressure to select a running mate from a larger right-wing party. However, his loyalty to Alckmin ultimately prevailed in the decision.
The Partnership: Rivalry to Running Mates
Geraldo Alckmin, 73, is a center-right politician who previously ran against Lula for the presidency in 2006, losing by significant margins.
Alckmin currently serves as the government's Industry Minister. Lula announced during a Cabinet meeting in Brasilia that Alckmin must step down from this ministerial role.
Electoral Law Compliance
The departure is necessary for Alckmin to remain eligible for the vice-presidential candidacy under Brazil's electoral statutes. Lula stated, “Our partner Alckmin will have to leave the Industry Ministry. He will have to leave because he will be candidate for vice president once again.”
Brazil's electoral law mandates that government ministers seeking office in the October election must resign their Cabinet posts by April 4.
Alckmin's Political History and Role
Alckmin's background, characterized by conservative and right-leaning roots, proved advantageous for Lula's narrow victory over former President Jair Bolsonaro in 2022.
Known affectionately as Dr. Alckmin, he is a soft-spoken Catholic politician who governed São Paulo, Brazil's wealthiest state, on three separate occasions.
Past Presidential Bids
Alckmin's presidential aspirations saw him lose to Lula in a 2006 runoff. Furthermore, he began the 2018 campaign as the frontrunner but was ultimately defeated in the first round by the political outsider, Bolsonaro.
In 2022, Alckmin made a significant political shift by joining the Brazilian Socialist Party to align with Lula, departing from the center-right Brazilian Social Democracy Party he co-founded thirty years prior.
Contributions to the Current Administration
During his tenure as Vice President, Alckmin has played a crucial role in Lula's administration. His involvement included key tariff discussions with the U.S. government.
He was also instrumental in the negotiations that finalized the trade agreement between the South American bloc Mercosur and the European Union.
