Danielle Tammone plunged into the hole at her Bohemia home as her golden retriever, Daisy, watched in terror. Tammone said the collapse happened in seconds. It happened so quickly. My feet just sunk a little bit, but it was like seconds.I did not even have time, she told 1010 WINS. And then I was just down the hole. Just in the ground. She spent several terrifying minutes trapped underground in the quiet residential neighborhood.Tammone said she suddenly found herself eight feet below the surface. It happened on her birthday. In shock, Tammone tried to make sense of what had happened. She asked herself, Okay, what just happened?Where am I? Alright, I am in the ground. You are in a hole, wow.Then panic set in, and her thoughts raced toward death. She said, And then the panic starts, because you are like wow, I could die today. This could not end well. I could be buried alive.Tammone also recalled thinking about suffocation. People suffocate and they die, so I thought that at first, she said. She believed she was trapped for roughly 30 minutes, though first responders pulled her out after a tense ten-minute nightmare. She struggled to breathe while gasping, scared and crying.I could not breathe well, because I was gasping, and scared and crying, she said. I was trying to put my legs up to get out, but the stone was crumbling down. The cesspool was a stone structure that was partially crumbling. Lawn sod dangled dangerously over Tammone as she yelled for help, and the walls kept breaking apart around her.Tammone screamed and cried for help, and her screams were heard by neighbors. One neighbor happened to walk onto her porch as another was getting into her car. Both heard the screams and came running. Christine Chanowsky said the rescuers did not initially know where Tammone was.At first, we thought she was in the shed or something. We were not looking on the ground, Chanowsky said. As they searched the yard, the neighbors urged Tammone to keep making noise. And they said keep screaming, do not stop screaming, Tammone said.Backyard video obtained by 1010 WINS shows the two neighbors sprinting across the lawn and promising aid. One cried out, Oh my God, she fell into the ground, adding, We are on the phone with 911. The other reassured her, You are going to be fine, Danielle. They are on their way.Emergency responders, including firefighters, police, an ambulance, a special unit and EMTs, arrived at Tammone's home. They used a ladder to get through mud, water and roots to rescue her from the pit. Chanowsky said the ordeal left her emotional and immensely relieved that her neighbor survived. She told CBS, Firemen, cops, ambulance, special unit, EMTs, they were wonderful.I was tearing up. I was crying. As soon as she got out of the hole, just gave her the biggest hug. Tammone, a licensed physical therapist, is now working on her own recovery.She suffered whiplash and pulled muscles, but she said she is overcome with gratitude. She also described a surprising moment after she was pulled to safety. And they all sang happy birthday to me. It was great, she beamed.The fall happened in Tammone's quiet residential Bohemia backyard. She had never met the neighbors who rushed to help her before, but their quick actions and calls to 911 brought rescuers to the scene.
