Long Island Residents Rescue Neighbor From Blaze

A Long Island high school student and his mother are credited with saving a neighbor’s life after a house fire broke out on Leighton Court in Melville on Tuesday morning.

How the Rescue Unfolded

Ninth grader Jovani Moss was waiting for his school bus when he noticed flames erupting from a neighboring home. “I heard the sound of the fire. Like, I heard the sound of the cracking of the house and stuff like that, and then I turned and looked and I seen it,” he recounted. “The flames coming out of the side of the house.”

Jovani immediately alerted his mother, Natechia Campbell-Moss. “He said, ‘Mom, the house across the street is on fire. What should I do? Should I go over there or should I just call 911?’” Campbell-Moss recalled.

Urgent Action to Save a Life

While Jovani contacted 911, his mother rushed to the neighbor’s house to alert the resident. “I kept banging on the windows. I’m banging on the door. I’m ringing the doorbell,” Campbell-Moss explained. “‘Your house is on fire. Your house is on fire.’ And she’s not hearing me.”

Determined to reach her neighbor, Campbell-Moss repeatedly kicked at the door until it broke open. Inside, she found her neighbor, who was asleep and unaware of the danger. “I said, ‘Your house is on fire,’ and I grabbed her,” Campbell-Moss said. “The heat was, like, overpowering.”

Recognition and Gratitude

At school, Jovani is being praised for his quick thinking. “A lot of people calling me a hero. I was like, I’m not really a hero. I’m just being a good neighbor,” he stated. His mother emphasized the importance of situational awareness, advising him to “Take out the ear pods. Keep your phone in your pocket until you get on that bus…Be aware of everything around you. Anything can happen.”

The homeowner, a recent widow, expressed her gratitude to her neighbors for their life-saving actions. Local firefighters have also recognized Jovani’s heroism, offering him a position on their junior firefighter squad.

Fire Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but authorities do not suspect foul play. While the house sustained significant damage, a life was saved thanks to the swift actions of a mother and son.
