Liverpool’s Right-Back Position Hit by Injury
Arne Slot, the Liverpool manager, faces a familiar tactical challenge after right-back Jeremie Frimpong sustained an injury while playing for the Netherlands on Tuesday. Frimpong came on as a substitute during the 1–1 draw against Ecuador but was substituted off after just 12 minutes.
Koeman Confirms Frimpong’s Injury
Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman confirmed the substitution was due to an injury, stating, “That was a blow, we had to substitute him.” The extent of Frimpong’s injury is currently unknown, and Liverpool will be awaiting a full assessment.
A Recurring Problem for Liverpool
This injury is particularly concerning as Frimpong was Liverpool’s only fit natural right-back before the international break. The Reds will once again need to find a solution to cover the position. Losing a key player in this position is a significant setback for any team.
Frimpong’s Injury History at Anfield
Prior to joining Liverpool, Frimpong had only missed 11 games for club and country throughout his career. However, he has already been sidelined for 25 matches this season due to three separate hamstring injuries. This unfortunate pattern has forced Arne Slot to frequently adjust his defensive lineup.
Potential Replacements for Frimpong
With primary deputy Conor Bradley also sidelined with a long-term injury, Slot will need to explore alternative options. Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to fill in at right-back again, potentially starting with this weekend’s FA Cup quarterfinal.
Ramsay and Gomez as Alternatives
Interestingly, Liverpool do have a recognized right-back in their squad, Calvin Ramsay, but he has remained an unused substitute in every Premier League game since mid-December. Slot has publicly stated he doesn’t currently view Ramsay as the best option. Joe Gomez, a versatile player, could also be considered, but recent physical issues limited his involvement before the international break.
Endo Ruled Out
Japan international Wataru Endo has previously played at right-back this season, but is currently unavailable due to his own injury.
