For the first time since 2016, Lego is reintroducing Bionicle to its product lineup. However, the return isn't in the form fans might expect – it's as part of the latest series of collectible minifigures.
Bionicle's Legacy
Bionicle originally helped Lego overcome financial difficulties in the late 1990s. Despite its initial success, the subline faced a surprising cancellation in 2010, becoming one of Lego’s most missed creations.
The New Minifigure Series
Lego officially announced its 29th series of collectible minifigures, scheduled for release in May. This series features 12 unique minifigures, continuing the tradition of diverse and original characters.
A Cosplaying Tahu
Among the new figures, one is generating significant excitement: a human minifigure cosplaying as Tahu, a popular Bionicle character. The minifigure includes Tahu’s signature red mask, which is removable, revealing the smiling face of the cosplayer underneath.
The Tahu minifigure also comes with a miniature replica of the character’s flaming sword and a cylindrical tube representing the original Bionicle packaging.
Limited Return & Future Possibilities
In early 2023, Lego released a brick-built Tahu and Takua set as a limited-time gift with purchase. This new minifigure represents the first time a Bionicle character has been available as a standalone product in over a decade.
Lego may be gauging fan interest through the popularity of this minifigure. Strong sales could potentially signal a larger revival of the Bionicle action figure and transmedia series in the future.
