Lamar Odom's children have recently shared details regarding their complex relationship with their father, particularly addressing the period when he was married to Khloé Kardashian. Destiny, 27, and Lamar “LJ” Odom Jr., 23, discussed these dynamics in the Netflix series Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom.
Reflections on the Khloé Kardashian Marriage
The documentary featured Odom, 46, discussing his 2009 marriage to Kardashian, 41, noting that the union was not universally supported by his family. Odom revealed in the documentary, which aired on Tuesday, March 31, that his children's mother prevented them from attending the ceremony.
Children's Perspectives on the Wedding
LJ Odom clarified that he had never even met Khloé Kardashian at the time of the wedding. Destiny recalled choosing not to attend because she did not wish to be a "show pony" due to the event being filmed for Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
Liza Morales, 46, Odom's ex-partner from 1996 to 2008, expressed her feelings about the quick marriage and media involvement. Morales stated, "If you want to get married in front of 100 people and all these cameras, that's totally cool. It's on you." She added that deciding to marry someone in just 30 days would naturally cause hurt, especially when it was slated for television.
Odom's Family Guest List
Odom's aunt offered a different perspective on the wedding attendance. She clarified that Lamar did not invite any family members, with the exception of his childhood best friend, Pumpkin.
Pumpkin recounted speaking with Odom for two hours that night, where he explained the move was intended to "better his future." She noted that the guest list consisted mainly of older acquaintances, described as "60 to 70 year olds," who could provide Odom with important professional connections.
Struggles with Addiction and Estrangement
Despite missing the wedding, LJ admitted he enjoyed parts of his father's time associated with the famous family. He mentioned looking forward to Christmas because he anticipated receiving "some good presents" from Kris Jenner and Khloé.
The estrangement between Destiny, LJ, and their father intensified as Odom's struggles with addiction worsened. Destiny recalled an incident where they planned to attend a parade with the former Los Angeles Lakers player, but he failed to show up.
Destiny emphasized the lasting impact of parental absence, stating, "Rejection from a parent is extremely hard and hurtful. It definitely pains your development growing up." She acknowledged now understanding that those missed moments were due to his substance use.
Odom reflected on his addiction, explaining, "When you're on drugs, there's always going to be embarrassment." He added that for some individuals, drug use unlocks something uncontrollable, unlike others who can easily repeat a brief high.
Hospitalization and Aftermath
The documentary also touched upon Odom's 2015 overdose. Odom's family accused Khloé Kardashian of preventing them from accessing his hospital room and requiring them to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Kardashian countered this by claiming she instituted "filters on who" she would allow near Odom after drug dealers attempted to enter his room. Following his recovery, Destiny expressed distress seeing Odom active in Los Angeles events without visiting his children or entering rehab.
Destiny stated, "He never went to rehab... He just acted like the coma thing never really happened. I was like, 'You didn't even come to see me.'"
Current Relationship Status
The documentary concluded by showing Odom spending time with LJ, but Destiny's current relationship status with her father remained unclear.
LJ commented on his father's ongoing recovery journey. He suggested that despite Odom's growth, he sometimes needs to be redirected. LJ concluded, "We all got a lot of growing up to do but I feel like he has got a lot of growing up to do."
