Lakers head coach JJ Redick secured his 100th regular-season victory with Tuesday night’s dominant win against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The milestone came after a successful March for the team, going 15-2.
Celebrating Team and Individual Achievements
Following the game, Redick acknowledged several team and individual accomplishments during a speech to the players. He highlighted forward Rui Hachimura reaching his 5,000th career point and celebrated Luka Dončić’s impressive March, where he surpassed 15,000 career points.
He also recognized LeBron James’ latest milestone – breaking the all-time career wins record, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Lakers’ 50th win of the season was also celebrated, marking the first time since the Phil Jackson era that the team has achieved consecutive 50-win seasons.
A Personal Moment
General Manager Rob Pelinka arranged a special moment for Redick, showing a video message from Redick’s sons, Knox and Kai, congratulating him. Redick was visibly moved by the gesture.
Balancing Coaching and Family
In a recent interview, Redick discussed his work-life balance, recalling a conversation with Pelinka during the job interview process. He explained his commitment to being fully present for his children between 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. each day.
Redick prioritizes attending his sons’ sporting events on off days, emphasizing the importance of family time. He described managing life’s demands as balancing “four burners” – work, health, family, and friends.
Lakers' Success and Team Chemistry
Redick attributed the Lakers’ recent success to improved health and players settling into their roles. He emphasized that the team’s leadership comes from within, with each player contributing to their strong performance.
LeBron James echoed this sentiment, stating the team’s chemistry is “high” heading into April. He praised the close-knit group and their positive atmosphere, both on and off the court.
Roots in Coaching
Redick’s upbringing played a significant role in his coaching philosophy. His parents, both life coaches, instilled in him a desire to help and mentor others. He enjoyed assisting younger players during his time with the New Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers.
Despite not initially pursuing a traditional NBA coaching path, Redick knew after a stint with the Toronto Raptors that he wanted to become a head coach. He dedicated a year and a half to preparing for the role.
Looking Ahead
The Lakers are now just three wins away from recording their most successful season since the 2010-11 campaign. While acknowledging the achievements of legendary coaches like Phil Jackson and Pat Riley, Redick believes he has “a lot left to accomplish.”
