Los Angeles to Deploy 125 Traffic Cameras

This summer, the city of Los Angeles is implementing a pilot program to install 125 speed enforcement cameras across dozens of streets. The initiative aims to reduce traffic collisions primarily caused by speeding.

Program Details and Timeline

On Tuesday, Los Angeles became the latest city to receive approval from its leaders to install cameras throughout its 15 council districts, spanning from the San Fernando Valley to San Pedro. Installation will take place between April and July. Drivers photographed traveling 11 mph or more over the speed limit will receive a 60-day grace period before receiving a citation.

Five-Year Pilot Program

This measure is part of a five-year pilot program authorized by a law signed in 2023, designed to combat speeding and a concerning rise in traffic fatalities. According to a recent report from the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), traffic fatalities in the city decreased between 2024 and 2025, but the number of deaths remains persistently high.

Speeding as a Major Factor

Authorities state that speeding is responsible for nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities. LADOT data demonstrates that speed cameras on roadways reduce speeding by 31% to 82% and decrease fatal accidents by 53% to 71%.

Cities Participating in the Pilot Program

The statewide pilot program includes the cities of Los Angeles, San Jose, Oakland, Glendale, Long Beach, and San Francisco. San Francisco, having installed 33 speed cameras, issued over 26,000 traffic citations in 2024 and 122,000 in 2025, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Installation Progress in Other Cities

Other cities have begun installing their cameras this year, including Oakland, which installed 18 in January. Long Beach plans to install 18 cameras this spring, Glendale will add nine this spring, and San Jose plans to add 33 this summer. Cameras will be tested and installed between April and July.

Fines for Speeding Violations

Once operational, drivers will have a 60-day grace period before being cited for exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more. The fine amount depends on the speed over the limit:

  • $50 for 11-15 mph over the limit
  • $100 for 16-25 mph over the limit
  • $200 for 26 mph or more over the limit
  • $500 for exceeding the speed limit by 160 km/h
