LA Influencer Burglary Uncovers High-End Theft Ring

A Los Angeles influencer’s home invasion has revealed a pattern of burglaries targeting individuals known for their style and possessions, leading to a community of victims and a search for a thief with a penchant for high-end midcentury modern furniture.

The Initial Break-In

On June 5, 2024, influencer Victoria Paris received a message from her landlord indicating a possible break-in at her Los Angeles home. Paris, 25 at the time, was in New York finalizing a business deal and preparing for a trip to Europe. The message confirmed her fears: her home had been burglarized, entered through an unsecured bathroom window.

“I was sick to my stomach. I couldn’t move,” Paris recounted. The thief stole designer items including two Rabanne bags, two Miu Miu bags, Hermes scarves, a Louis Vuitton duffel bag, and jewelry, totaling over $15,000 in value. Surveillance footage showed the burglar returned the following day but was unable to re-enter after the window was secured.

Going Public and Connecting Victims

Despite advice to remain silent, Paris, known for her transparency with her 2 million TikTok followers, decided to publicize the incident. “I was like, ‘OK, now we got to get his ass’,” she stated. Her video quickly garnered attention, but it was the comments that proved most valuable.

One commenter revealed a similar break-in at a jewelry brand they worked for, potentially linked to the same perpetrator. Paris connected with the brand owners and began compiling a list of other potential victims. The pattern extended beyond jewelry and handbags to include valuable, rare midcentury modern furniture.

A Shared Aesthetic

Victims discovered they were often connected through social media or personal relationships. “The pattern is definitely people with good taste,” Victoria observed. “I loved everybody he was burglarizing. It was definitely a vibe.” One victim, a vintage furniture dealer, had even managed to recover a stolen item.

Paris’s TikTok videos became a rallying point, allowing victims to share information and strategize. Despite their collective efforts, the thief’s motives and ultimate goal remain unknown.

The Allure of Midcentury Modern

The investigation led back to earlier incidents involving Amanda Hallberg, founder of Modern Conscience, a furniture restoration business established in the early 2000s while she was in architecture school. Hallberg’s initial interest in the furniture stemmed from a personal obsession and a need to furnish her student life affordably.

“I was a poor student putting myself through school, and I really love this furniture and really needed it,” Hallberg explained. She focused on collecting pieces designed by Charles and Ray Eames, particularly their iconic lounge chairs.

A Growing Market

Hallberg noted the increasing value of midcentury modern furniture. “The furniture has become almost like art,” she said. “You could buy an Eames lounge at the beginning of the summer, and by the end of the summer it has increased in value.” She received an order for a rare Eames dining chair priced at $684, followed by a request for an even rarer chair with unique markings, attracting the attention of a discerning collector – potentially the same individual targeting the recent victims.
