Knicks Championship Celebration Turns Violent in New York City The New York Knicks' first NBA title in 53 years led to widespread, but often unruly, celebrations across Manhattan. Thousands took to the streets after the victory, but the festivities were marked by property damage, a shooting that injured a teenager, and multiple arrests by the NYPD. The New York Knicks' historic NBA championship victory after more than half a century sparked massive celebrations across Manhattan that ultimately turned chaotic and violent. Thousands of fans flooded the streets near Madison Square Garden and in Times Square following the Knicks' 94-90 win over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Finals. The jubilation, however, descended into disorder with reports of damaged vehicles, including an NYPD patrol car whose windshield was smashed, and scattered outbreaks of gunfire. Early Sunday morning, a shooting near 42nd Street and Broadway left a 17-year-old male hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the foot.Police took three persons of interest into custody and recovered a firearm. The NYPD, which had maintained a heavy presence around key celebration sites, indicated that multiple arrests were made as they worked to disperse crowds. City officials, including public figures, had pleaded for responsible celebration, but videos on social media showed fans climbing on buses and police officers making tackles. The unrest marred what was otherwise a moment of long-awaited triumph for the franchise and its supporters
