Kerry Kennedy, niece of the late President John F. Kennedy, directed a sharp message toward Donald Trump following legal action concerning the Kennedy Center's designation.
She shared a link on the social media platform X regarding a lawsuit demanding that Trump, along with the Kennedy Center's board and staff, revert the arts complex's title to its official name: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Legal Challenge Against Renaming Effort
The Kennedy Center was originally established and named to serve as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy.
In December 2025, the center's board, whose members are selected by the president, voted on a measure that has since spurred controversy. This action led to the installation of new signage reading, “The Donald Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
Kerry Kennedy's Direct Rebuke
Kerry Kennedy expressed support for a motion filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., by Democratic Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio. The suit seeks to halt Trump and the center's leadership from informally branding the venue as “The Trump-Kennedy Center.”
Representative Beatty argues that the center is legally designated by Congress as the nation's sole official memorial to President Kennedy. Her filing contends that the proposed renaming violates federal statutes and breaches the board’s fiduciary responsibilities.
A Lesson in Presidential Memorials
Reacting to the lawsuit on X, Kennedy drew a parallel between historical memorials. She stated: “To honor President Jefferson, Congress erected the Jefferson Memorial. To honor President Lincoln, Congress erected the Lincoln Memorial. To honor President Kennedy, Congress erected the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”
Kennedy emphasized that no single president or board possesses the authority to alter this designation. She asserted, “No president, no board of directors, can change the names or send in a wrecking crew under the guise of ‘repairs.’”
The Four-Word Command
Kennedy concluded her public statement with a direct address to the former President. She commanded: “Stand down, President Trump. You are no king, and you don’t have the power. Only Congress can change that.”
Previous Opposition to Trump's Name Inclusion
This is not Kennedy's first public criticism regarding the inclusion of Trump's name. Previously, she accused Trump of “repressing” artistic expression, arguing this contradicts the center's core mission.
She wrote on X that Trump's administration had spent the past year targeting artists and journalists while erasing the history of Americans who advanced justice. Kennedy contrasted this with President Kennedy’s legacy, noting, “President Kennedy proudly stood for justice, peace, equality, dignity, diversity, and compassion for those who suffer. President Trump stands in opposition to these values, and his name should not be placed alongside President Kennedy’s.”
Future Plans and Construction Timeline
Following the initial signage installation, Kerry Kennedy had previously posted a viral message on X promising action upon Trump's departure from office. She declared she would personally remove the letters with a pickax, asking supporters, “Are you in?”
Separately, an announcement was made on Truth Social indicating that the center is scheduled to close for approximately two years of construction and renovation starting on July 4, 2026.
