A significant new prospect has emerged for the Kansas Jayhawks in the upcoming transfer portal window. This potential target is a familiar face, having competed in the Big 12 conference just last season.
Isiah Harwell Announces Transfer Intentions
Although the official transfer portal opening is set for April 7, freshman Isiah Harwell has already declared his intention to enter the market. On3 expert Joe Tipton confirmed the news in a post on Monday evening.
Harwell played the 2025-26 season with Big 12 rival Houston. The former 5-star recruit immediately ranks among the most coveted players available. He is now considered a top prospect for the Kansas basketball program.
Background and Freshman Struggles at Houston
Hailing from Pocatello, Idaho, Harwell was highly regarded coming out of high school. 247 Sports ranked him as the No. 16 player in the Class of 2025.
His commitment to the Cougars made him Houston’s highest-rated recruit ever, fueling expectations of stardom. However, his freshman campaign did not meet those high standards.
Harwell averaged just 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds across 32 appearances. He shot an inefficient 27.9% from the field and never recorded a start. By the postseason, he had largely fallen out of Kelvin Sampson's rotation.
Untapped Potential and Kansas Connection
Despite the difficult start, Harwell still possesses immense potential for a new program to develop. His 5-star rating underscores the talent he brings to the table.
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound guard was lauded in high school for his shooting ability, high basketball IQ, and promising defense. Kansas could be the program that helps him realize that potential.
Flashing Talent and Future Outlook
Harwell showed glimpses of his ability during the season. This included a 20-point outburst against Jackson State.
He also posted double-digit scoring games in conference matchups versus Cincinnati and Baylor. Notably, these three games accounted for nearly half of his total three-pointers made all year.
Scouts often viewed him as one of the best mid-range shooters in his class, suggesting external factors may have contributed to his late-season struggles. His confidence seemed to wane as he lost consistent minutes under Coach Kelvin Sampson.
While Kansas did not pursue Harwell heavily during his initial recruitment, their familiarity with him from Big 12 competition demands action. The Jayhawks should aggressively pursue him once he officially enters the portal. His high ceiling relative to potential NIL costs could make him a significant bargain for Coach Bill Self and the team.
