Thousands of riders who rely on the Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s (JTA) Connexion Plus service began paying higher fares on Thursday, marking the first price increase for the service since 2019.
Fare Changes and Service Details
The on-demand service, designed for individuals with disabilities needing transportation to work, school, and medical appointments, now costs $10 for the first 12 miles. Each additional mile beyond that will be charged at $2.50. Previously, the fare structure was $6 for the first 15 miles and $2 per additional mile.
Most Connexion Plus trips are under 12 miles, meaning the majority of riders will now pay a $10 base fare. A significant change is the removal of the monthly trip limit, a decision applauded by advocacy groups after initial proposals suggested a 40-trip per month restriction.
Financial Justification and Pilot Program
JTA officials stated the fare adjustments are necessary to stabilize operating costs and address a budget shortfall resulting from lower-than-expected sales tax revenue. The agency will operate the new pricing structure as a six-month pilot program.
Following the pilot period, a task force will evaluate the new fare structure to determine if it will become permanent.
Rider Statistics and Service History
JTA reports that of its over 7,900 Connexion customers, 52% utilize only the Connexion service, 32% use only Connexion Plus, and 16% use both. In 2025, Connexion completed over 284,000 trips, while Connexion Plus facilitated nearly 203,000 trips.
Since its inception in 1971, Connexion Plus has undergone five fare increases. The service continues to be a vital transportation option for many residents of Northeast Florida who require accessible, private transportation.
