Joseph Duggar made his initial court appearance on Tuesday in Bay County, Florida, nearly two weeks after his arrest. Duggar, known for the reality show Counting On, was extradited to the county jail from the Washington County Correctional Facility in Arkansas.
Court Appearance and Request for Fair Treatment
During the arraignment, Duggar’s legal representative argued that his client should be treated equitably. "He’s asking to be treated as fairly as anyone else, regardless of his status in the television industry," the lawyer stated in court.
The judge acknowledged this sentiment, ordering that Duggar be treated fairly, specifically "regardless of his status in the television industry." The booking photo from the Bay County Sheriff's Office showed the former reality star smirking with messy hair.
Prosecution's Stance and Bond Request
The prosecutor from the State Attorney’s Office emphasized the gravity of the allegations. They described the charges as a "serious charge against the child" and requested stringent conditions.
The State requested a substantial bond, noting that while Duggar lacks a criminal history, he was reportedly on vacation and had only a short-term presence in the community.
Strict Conditions Imposed by the Judge
The judge established strict protective orders for the duration of the proceedings. These orders are designed to safeguard the alleged victim and other children.
The court mandated that Duggar must have "no contact with the alleged victim." Furthermore, the judge ordered "no unsupervised contact with any minors under the age of 18."
Details of the Charges Against Duggar
Joseph Duggar faces multiple serious accusations. These include charges of lewd and lascivious behavior involving a victim younger than 12, as well as lewd and lascivious behavior toward a victim aged 18 or older.
The alleged incidents reportedly involved Duggar touching the child beneath a blanket and repeatedly asking her to sit on his lap, actions for which he later apologized.
Additionally, Duggar was charged with four counts each of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of false imprisonment. These charges reportedly relate to specific rooms.
Charges Filed Against Kendra Duggar
Joseph Duggar’s wife, Kendra Duggar, who shares four children with him, was also charged in connection with the case. She faces the same counts: four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and four counts of false imprisonment.
During a recorded conversation on March 20, Kendra Duggar informed Joseph that she had retained legal counsel, Travis Story. She clarified to Joseph that the attorney was retained "only for" her.
