Netflix is offering a second chance to Jordan Peele’s recent box office misfire, Him, beginning this month. The 2025 horror film, produced by the acclaimed writer/director behind Get Out, struggled to find an audience in theaters despite Peele’s involvement.
'Him' Arrives on Netflix April 19th
Him will be available to stream in the United States starting on April 19th. The sports-themed horror movie is directed by Justin Tipping and co-written by Tipping, Skip Bronkie, and Zack Akers.
The Story Behind the Horror
Marlon Wayans stars as Isaiah White, an aging professional football quarterback who takes on the training of a promising young athlete, Cameron Cade. However, the training takes a horrifying turn, challenging Cade’s perception of his mentor.
Critical Reception and Box Office Performance
Him received largely negative reviews, earning a 31% “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes. While critics praised the film’s visual style, they were critical of its social commentary and tonal inconsistencies. ScreenRant noted the film had “great ideas and thought-provoking commentary,” but the “lead-up to an admittedly explosive conclusion doesn’t land.”
The film grossed just $27 million worldwide.
A Contrast in Success
The disappointing performance of Him was particularly notable as Jordan Peele had previously been involved in a bidding war for another 2025 horror hit, Weapons. Ultimately, Weapons went to Warner Bros. and New Line, grossing $270 million globally – ten times the amount earned by Him. Some reports indicate Peele fired his managers following the loss of the project.
Looking Ahead for Jordan Peele
Peele’s next directorial project, a follow-up to Nope, has been removed from Universal’s release schedule, adding to the recent challenges following the underperformance of Him.
