Teddi Mellencamp revealed a heartfelt conversation with her father, John Mellencamp, that brought her to tears after honoring him at the 2026 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Emotional Support After the Awards
On the Tuesday, March 31st episode of her “Two Ts in a Pod” podcast, Teddi, 44, shared details of the call. John reportedly told her, “Teddy, that was so good,” and emphasized her strength. He encouraged her, saying, “That should show you that even when you’re not feeling well, you can step up and you can do these hard things…Your mind is playing tricks on you and telling you you can’t do it anymore. You can.”
A Powerful Presentation
Teddi presented her father, 74, with the iHeartRadio Icon Award at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Thursday, March 26th. She spoke about the impact of his music, particularly the song “Longest Days.”
Reflecting on Personal Connection
“His plethora of songs a place in the hearts of millions,” Teddi told the audience. She continued, sharing a personal connection to the lyrics: “But for me, ‘Longest Days’ has been the song that means the most…Because it was a little over a year ago when I got sick, my life felt short, even when the days in the hospital seemed to go on forever.”
Father's Support During Cancer Battle
Teddi explained how her father actively supported her during her health struggles. “He wasn’t going to let that lyric define my life. He stepped up, took control, fought for me and pretty much changed my life, saved my life,” she stated. They shared a hug on stage before John offered advice to emerging artists.
Red Carpet Reflections
Speaking exclusively to Us Weekly on the red carpet, Teddi expressed her excitement for her father’s recognition. “I’m just so excited for my dad,” she said. “When he called me and asked me if I would present, it was an honor to me, because he’s been such an incredible dad. He’s been there for me so much these last few months.”
Teddi's Cancer Journey
Teddi publicly announced her stage II melanoma diagnosis in 2022. She later revealed in 2025 the development of multiple brain tumors. In April 2025, her cancer progressed to stage IV, but she received encouraging news in October 2025, with scans showing “no detectable cancer” during immunotherapy treatment.
