Jets Fall to 1-3 as Bears Dominate 23-13 in Week 4 Loss The New York Jets suffered their third straight loss, falling 23-13 to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field as Aaron Glenn's team was outgained 492-157 in total yards. Snap counts reveal Braelon Allen's increased role, Andre Cisco's reduced playing time, and D'Angelo Ponds' emergence in the secondary. The New York Jets dropped to 1-3 on the season after a 23-13 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Sunday, marking their third consecutive defeat. Chicago Delivers Historic Statistical DominanceThe Bears dominated in every facet, outgaining the Jets 492-157 in total yards and running 89 plays to New York's 32. Chicago also amassed 34 first downs compared to just seven for the Jets. The disparity was historic, as the Bears had more first downs than the Jets ran offensive plays, the first time that has happened in the NFL in 10 years.Chicago rushed 54 times for 232 yards and controlled the ball for 42:45 compared to just 17:15 for New York. The Jets went 0-for-7 on third downs and committed 12 penalties for 76 yards, with three of those penalties negating interceptions. Head coach Aaron Glenn expressed deep frustration after the game.I am very, very disappointed, on a number of different levels, Glenn said, citing the penalties that negated turnovers, the sputtering offense that converted just two field goals off the two turnovers the defense forced, and the defense's inability to get off the field. We all have to muster up something inside to get this turned in the right direction when we have a game like this.Glenn also addressed the negative history surrounding the franchise, which has not made the playoffs in 15 years. There are too many people who want to think about history, Glenn said. Inside that locker room, I want my guys not to think about history, because it is going to be brought up so much from the outside, people beating us down with history.Breece Hall Injury Elevates Braelon AllenWe just have to circle the wagons and not let any of that come inside our locker room. With Breece Hall missing Week 4 due to a quad injury, second-year running back Braelon Allen saw his role expand significantly. Allen played 93.8 percent of offensive snaps, going 30-of-32, compared to 51.5 percent in Week 3.All 14 carries out of the backfield went to Allen, while Isaiah Davis played just two offensive snaps after seeing zero in the first three weeks. The return of safety Minkah Fitzpatrick from injury drastically changed the defensive snap counts. Andre Cisco, who had played 44, 59, and a season-high 65 snaps in the first three weeks, saw his playing time plummet to just three defensive snaps on Sunday.Minkah Fitzpatrick Return Reshapes Jets DefenseFitzpatrick and Dane Belton are terrific starting safeties when healthy, but the NFL season is long and New York should not want to tire them out. Rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds finally got his opportunity after starting slowly due to an offseason injury situation. Ponds played 18 defensive snaps against the Bears, with 14 coming in the slot, after making his debut with two snaps against the Lions last week. He recorded a run stop and was not targeted in coverage. With a concussion sidelining a teammate, Ponds could be the No. 1 slot cornerback moving forward. Defensive lineman Heflin saw his playing time increase after a chest injury ruled out a teammate in the second half. Heflin finished with 16 defensive snaps, including seven pass-rush opportunities, up from eight in his Jets debut in Week 3. If the injured player misses time, expect Heflin's snap count to continue growing.Tyson Bagent Outduels Geno SmithBears quarterback Tyson Bagent, an undrafted free agent out of Division II Shepherd University, grossly outplayed Jets quarterback Geno Smith. Bagent, who had not started an NFL game since his rookie year in 2023, was 25-for-34 passing for 268 yards in place of starter Caleb Williams, who was out with a hamstring injury.Smith, who entered the game with a sparkling 75.5 completion percentage, was just 8-for-15 for 119 yards, with 58 of those yards coming on a garbage-time touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams in the fourth quarter. The Jets did end a long interception drought when Fitzpatrick picked off Bagent in the second quarter. New York had not had a pick since the 2024 season finale, having gone 20 games without one.Glenn, now in his second season as head coach, is 4-17 with the Jets, while Bears head coach Ben Johnson, who was the Lions offensive coordinator while Glenn was defensive coordinator, is 14-7 with Chicago. Kyle Monangai scored a touchdown for the Bears in the first quarter, and Xavier Woods tackled Allen during the second quarter. The loss leaves the Jets searching for answers as they prepare for a Week 5 showdown against the Cleveland Browns, where Ponds could make his first potential NFL start.
