New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn made a bold declaration regarding quarterback Geno Smith during the NFL’s annual meeting on Tuesday. Glenn conveyed significant confidence that Smith is the player who can guide the franchise to ultimate success, what he termed the "promised land."
High Expectations Despite Past Struggles
This optimistic outlook comes after the Jets finished the previous season with a disappointing 3-14 record. Furthermore, Smith led the entire NFL in interceptions last season while playing for the Raiders, tallying 17 picks against 19 touchdowns.
Glenn acknowledged Smith's struggles in Las Vegas but emphasized that the Jets' current offensive structure will foster greater success. He specifically pointed to the quality of the offensive line, the strength of the running game, and star receiver Garrett Wilson as key factors.
The 'Chip on His Shoulder' Factor
The Jets coach highlighted Smith's mentality as a major asset for the team. Glenn stated, “There’s something about a quarterback with a chip on his shoulder.” He referenced Smith's proven track record, particularly during his time with the Seattle Seahawks.
According to Glenn, Smith perfectly aligns with the team's offensive philosophy. He noted, "He fits exactly what we’re trying to do. … I think he’s a perfect guy to do exactly what we’re going to do, especially when we can run the ball the way that we can run it. Now, be able to add some play action. I think he’s perfect for that.”
Addressing Last Season's Interceptions
Smith experienced statistical regression last year, throwing 17 interceptions. A significant contributing factor was the pressure he faced, as he was sacked a league-high 55 times behind a struggling Raiders offensive line.
Glenn admitted that Smith faced difficulties but contextualized them within the league. "I know he had his struggles and I think a lot of quarterbacks, they have their struggles,” Glenn commented. He added that Smith is aware of his shortcomings from the previous year.
The coach concluded by expressing optimism about Smith's commitment to improvement. "There’s some things that he knows he can play and he has he’s at fault from some of those but there’s some things that he knows he’s going to get better at and I look forward to him doing that.”
