Nun Attacked in Jerusalem, Suspect Arrested

A disturbing incident unfolded in Jerusalem this week as a nun was violently attacked in broad daylight. The assault, captured on CCTV, has sparked widespread condemnation and heightened anxieties regarding escalating anti-Christian sentiment.

Details of the Assault

The 48-year-old researcher, affiliated with the French School of Biblical and Archaeological Research, was aggressively shoved to the ground near the Cenacle on Mount Zion. This site holds significant religious importance for both Christians and Jews. The attacker then repeatedly kicked the nun while she was injured, resulting in significant bruising.

A bystander intervened, bringing the assault to an end. Israeli police responded quickly, arresting a 36-year-old male suspect. The suspect’s nationality has not yet been released to the public.

Investigation and Condemnation

Authorities are currently investigating potential racist motives behind the attack, underscoring the seriousness of violence targeting religious figures. The incident has drawn strong condemnation from religious leaders, diplomatic officials, and academic institutions.

Father Olivier Poquillon, director of the French School, described the attack as a “gratuitous assault” and an “act of sectarian violence.” The French Consulate in Jerusalem and Israel’s foreign ministry also issued statements condemning the act and reaffirming their commitment to religious freedom.

Growing Concerns Over Anti-Christian Hostility

The Faculty of Humanities at Hebrew University expressed “profound shock” and highlighted a “troubling pattern of rising hostility toward the Christian community.” A European diplomatic source noted that anti-Christian acts have become increasingly common in Jerusalem, with clergy frequently facing insults and harassment.

Wadie Abunassar, coordinator of the Holy Land Christian Forum, expressed “great anger” and “great sadness,” pointing to a perceived lack of consistent arrests and prosecutions in similar cases. He fears this pattern will continue without stronger action.

Recent Incidents and Calls for Protection

This attack follows a recent incident earlier this month involving Israeli soldiers who were removed from duty after destroying a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon. This further illustrates a concerning trend of disrespect towards Christian symbols and faith.

The increasing frequency of these acts and the lack of robust legal consequences are fueling anxieties within the Christian community, prompting calls for greater protection and accountability.
