Jen and Sharrieff Shah: A Relationship History
Coach Sharrieff Shah has remained a steadfast presence in the life of Jen Shah, even as the ‘Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ star faced legal challenges related to a telemarketing scheme. Their story, marked by both personal struggles and public scrutiny, began long before Bravo cameras entered the picture.
Early Years & Marriage
The couple first met in the 1990s while attending The University of Utah. Sharrieff recalled their first encounter in season 1 of ‘RHOSLC’: “I saw her, my heart stops immediately. I walk up to her, ‘Is that seat taken?’ She looks at me like, ‘There’s nobody there. I guess not.’”
Family and Faith
Jen became pregnant with their eldest son in 1994, and the pair married that same year. Prior to welcoming their second son, Omar, in 2003, Jen converted to Islam. Their family life unfolded as they built a life together.
‘RHOSLC’ and Legal Troubles
Bravo viewers were introduced to Jen and Sharrieff when ‘The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ premiered in November 2020. However, the spotlight soon turned to legal issues. In March 2021, Jen and her assistant, Stuart Smith, were arrested and accused of involvement in a telemarketing scheme targeting individuals over the age of 55.
The Allegations
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss stated at the time that Shah and Smith allegedly “generated and sold ‘lead lists’ of innocent individuals for other members of their scheme to repeatedly scam.” Both initially pleaded not guilty.
Plea Deal and Sentencing
Stuart Smith later changed his plea, while Jen ultimately pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in July 2022. Her plea deal carried a potential sentence of 11 to 14 years. On January 6, 2023, Jen was sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
Support Through Adversity
Throughout the legal proceedings, Sharrieff remained supportive. He penned a letter to the judge ahead of Jen’s sentencing, emphasizing the emotional toll the situation had taken on their family. He wrote about the “embarrassment, fear and shame” they experienced and Jen’s commitment to atonement.
A Message of Apology
Before beginning her 78-month sentence at FPC Bryan in Texas, Jen publicly apologized to the victims and her family. She expressed remorse and a desire to make amends, thanking her supporters and family for their unwavering love.
Maintaining Connection During Incarceration
Even while incarcerated, Jen and Sharrieff continued to acknowledge their relationship milestones. On their 31st wedding anniversary in August 2023, Jen shared a heartfelt message via Instagram, expressing her love and gratitude for Sharrieff’s support.
Looking Ahead
In a recent interview following her release in December 2025, Jen revealed that the events leading to the conspiracy coincided with a period of separation and emotional distress in her marriage. She cited grief and a recurrence of clinical depression as contributing factors.
