Set during the Second World War, the book is a bookend to his first international bestseller, Kane and Abel. Archer, known as Lord Archer of Weston-super-Mare, gave his farewell interview exclusively to the Daily Mail. Archer, who has sold more than 300 million copies of his books in 115 countries, said the new novel is his most ambitious yet and he believes it is the best he has ever written. He explained that at 86, he does not think he could do it again, so he decided to stop now. He hand-wrote 18 drafts over two years using a felt tip pen on a 32-line pad, and he does not know how to turn on a computer.Archer's Farewell Novel Adam & EveAdam & Eve shares the premise of two children born on the same day, Armistice Day 1918, but to families at opposite ends of the social spectrum. Adam is a shepherd's son, while Eve is the daughter of an Earl. The novel races along with trademark Archer plot twists and cliff-hangers, examining the gap between where people's lives start and where they end.Archer said he chose to make this his last novel because he finds old age tiresome and does not want his last books to be embarrassing. He has put in his will that no co-author can continue writing his books after his death, calling such practices swindling the public. He added that he has a hip problem and cannot move as fast as he would like, but he and his wife Mary are mentally sharp.Personal Life and Health ChallengesFollowing a cancer diagnosis in 2015, Archer had surgery to remove his prostate, which he revealed rendered him permanently impotent. He told the Daily Mail that he would rather have a life than be fertile and dead, calling it not much of a choice. Despite this, he remains an incorrigible flirt, as shown during the interview when he chatted animatedly with a 20-something photographic assistant who also works as a stunt double.Archer has been married to Dame Mary, 81, an eminent scientist, for 60 years.
