Vice President JD Vance is releasing a new book this spring that delves into his personal journey of religious faith and his adult conversion to Catholicism. The book is titled "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith."
New Memoir Details Spiritual Journey
Publication Details and Core Themes
HarperCollins imprint Harper announced the release date of June 16 to The Associated Press on Tuesday. HarperCollins also released the cover image for the 304-page book, which Vance wrote himself.
Vance, 41, stated that the narrative centers on his spiritual path. "The story of how I regained my faith, of course, only happened because I had lost it to begin with," he said in a statement.
He further questioned his past deviations from belief. "The interesting question that hangs over this book, and over my mind, is why I ever strayed from the path. Why the Christian faith of my youth failed to properly take root," Vance wrote.
Content and Timing
The Vice President has been working on "Communion" intermittently since 2019. The published work will reportedly contain material related to his time in politics.
Presidential hopefuls frequently publish books to gain exposure and solidify their message before launching campaigns. Vance's book release comes as he faces speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run, though he has indicated he is not focused on that until after the 2026 midterm elections.
Vance's Path to Catholicism
Shifting Beliefs and Conversion
Vance has publicly described his evolution from Christianity to atheism before ultimately converting to Catholicism. He completed his conversion in 2019.
The Vice President credits his renewed faith with providing a sense of purpose that he did not find through his education at Yale University or his career in the financial sector.
Political Context and Family Life
Vance first gained widespread recognition with his memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy," which explored his Appalachian roots. The book's popularity surged following Donald Trump's 2016 victory, as many sought to understand the appeal of his support base.
Initially a critic of Trump, Vance became a close political ally. He was elected as a Republican Senator for Ohio in 2022 and was selected as Trump's running mate two years later, making him the youngest vice president since Richard Nixon served under President Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s.
Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, currently have three young children. Usha Vance is expecting their fourth child, a boy, due in late July.
While many previous vice presidents, including Walter Mondale and Mike Pence, have published books, Vance would be the first in recent memory to do so while actively serving in office. Ron Howard adapted "Hillbilly Elegy" into a 2020 film starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams.
