Iran Team Honors Alleged Victims Before Costa Rica Friendly

The Iranian national soccer team and its officials made a poignant gesture before their World Cup warmup match against Costa Rica on Tuesday in Antalya, Turkey.

The group posed holding photographs depicting children who were allegedly victims of airstrikes attributed to the United States and Israel. The event took place at the stadium in Antalya, although no spectators were in attendance.

Presence of FIFA Leadership

FIFA President Gianni Infantino was present to witness the pre-match ceremony. The Iranian players stood alongside Coach Amir Ghalenoei, Iran Football Federation vice president Mehdi Mohammad Nabi, and various staff members.

While singing their national anthem, the contingent held the solemn photographs aloft. Iran ultimately secured a decisive 5-0 victory over Costa Rica in the friendly fixture.

Context of Previous Tributes

This tribute follows a similar demonstration held by the team earlier in the week. Last Friday, before facing Nigeria in another warmup, the players held small backpacks.

This earlier action was intended to honor the casualties of a devastating missile strike on a southern Iranian elementary school. That attack resulted in the deaths of over 165 individuals, predominantly children.

Attribution and International Response

The deadly strike is widely believed to have been launched by the U.S., though neither the United States nor Israel has officially claimed responsibility for the incident.

The United Nations and various human rights organizations have strongly condemned the attack. The U.S. military confirmed it is conducting an investigation, stating it has a policy against targeting civilians.

World Cup Scheduling Disputes

Iranian government and soccer officials have stated they do not intend to boycott the upcoming World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in June.

However, they cited the ongoing conflict initiated by the U.S. and Israel as the reason why it was impossible for the national team to travel to the United States.

Efforts to Relocate Group Matches

The Islamic Republic’s team is scheduled to play three group stage matches within the U.S.

The Iranian ambassador in Mexico City confirmed that the country formally requested FIFA relocate those three games to Mexico. This request followed statements by U.S. President Donald Trump discouraging the team from attending due to alleged safety concerns.

FIFA President Infantino has reportedly resisted these relocation attempts, emphasizing that the organization desires for the tournament to proceed exactly as scheduled.
