US Offensive Could Conclude Soon, Trump Says
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the U.S. military could potentially conclude its offensive operations against Iran within a timeframe of two to three weeks. He also signaled a potential shift in responsibility for securing the vital Strait of Hormuz, suggesting nations reliant on the waterway for oil and shipping should take on a greater role.
Prime-Time Address Planned
President Trump is scheduled to address the nation in a prime-time speech from the White House on Wednesday evening at 9 p.m. This address will likely detail the current state of the conflict and outline potential next steps.
Frustration with Allies and Oil Security
Trump has expressed frustration with allies he believes have not adequately supported U.S. efforts, stating they should “get your own oil.” His position has varied, sometimes highlighting diplomatic progress while simultaneously warning of potential escalation.
Iran Confirms Communication, No Direct Talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed to Al Jazeera that they have received messages from U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff. However, he clarified that no direct negotiations are currently underway between the two nations.
Troop Deployments and Naval Assets
Thousands of additional U.S. troops are being deployed to the Middle East, including soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division. The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, accompanied by three destroyers, is also being dispatched to the region, carrying over 6,000 sailors.
Rising Gas Prices
The ongoing conflict has significantly impacted U.S. gas prices, which have surged past an average of $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022. This increase mirrors a similar spike observed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine four years ago.
Oil Prices Increase
Global oil prices have also been affected, with spot prices of Brent crude oil hovering around $107 a barrel on Tuesday. This represents an increase of more than 45% since the conflict began on February 28th. Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz is a key factor driving up these prices.
