Escalating tensions between Iran and the United States continue, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accusing the U.S. of being unduly influenced by Israel. Pezeshkian stated Iran is prepared to withstand any aggression from the U.S., asserting that both confrontation and engagement remain possibilities.
Pezeshkian's Message to the American People
In a message directed to the American people, President Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s resilience throughout its history. He stated, “Throughout its millennia of proud history, Iran has outlasted many aggressors… Iran endures — resilient, dignified, and proud.”
Pezeshkian further accused the U.S. of acting as “a proxy for Israel” in the current conflict, claiming the U.S. has entered the conflict due to Israeli manipulation. He warned that “Continuing along the path of confrontation is more costly and futile than ever before.”
Trump's Statements and Troop Deployments
President Donald Trump has indicated the U.S. military operation against Iran could conclude within two to three weeks. He has also suggested a shift in responsibility for securing the Strait of Hormuz, urging nations reliant on it for oil and shipping to “get your own oil.”
Trump plans to address the nation in a prime-time address from the White House on Wednesday evening. He has expressed frustration with allies he believes have not adequately supported U.S. efforts.
Ceasefire Claims and Denials
President Trump claimed on Truth Social that Iran’s new president has requested a ceasefire, contingent upon the reopening of the Hormuz Strait. However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, dismissed this claim as “false and baseless” in a statement to Iranian state television.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed to Al Jazeera that they have received messages from U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, but stated that no direct negotiations are currently underway.
International Reactions and Economic Impact
Finnish President Alexander Stubb spoke with President Trump on Wednesday, discussing NATO, Ukraine, and Iran. Stubb noted the importance of seeking solutions to these problems collaboratively.
The conflict has significantly impacted global oil prices, with Brent crude hovering around $107 a barrel – a more than 45% increase since February 28th. Consequently, U.S. gas prices have surged, exceeding an average of $4 per gallon for the first time since 2022.
Military Movements
Thousands of additional U.S. troops are being deployed to the Middle East, including the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and accompanying destroyers. Soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division are also arriving in the region. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard asserted its firm control over the Strait of Hormuz, stating it would not be compromised.
