Invincible Season 4, Episode 5, titled “Give Us a Moment,” features a significant alteration from the original comic book source material. The character known as Tech Jacket is revealed to be a young woman named Zoe, a departure from the character’s portrayal as Zach in the comics.
Kirkman on the Character Shift
Robert Kirkman, co-showrunner of the Prime Video animated series and creator of the Invincible comics, explained the reasoning behind this change in an interview with Den of Geek. He realized that introducing Zach as-is would create too many parallels with Mark Grayson/Invincible.
“When it came time to introduce Tech Jacket, I realized that if we had brought him straight to comics, he’d be very similar to Mark,” Kirkman stated. “We decided early on that it would be interesting to gender swap this character. We started thinking about who Zoe would be instead of Zach. There are some exciting things that come up when you change that character.”
Praise for Zoey Deutch's Performance
Kirkman also highlighted the exceptional performance of Zoey Deutch, the voice actor for Zoe. He praised the “vibrancy” and “energy” she brings to the role, noting it’s “so much more affecting coming from Zoey Deutch.”
Co-showrunner Simon Racioppa echoed this sentiment, stating, “She’s incredible. She came in and knew the character. She’s so professional and fun to work with, and she has a great sense of humor…Zoey just delivers on all that. We could not be more delighted when we cast her for the show.”
Tech Jacket's Role in the War Against the Viltrumites
Tech Jacket first appeared in Season 3, Episode 7 of Invincible. The character is positioned as a potential ally in the ongoing war against the Viltrum Empire, as the suit was specifically designed to combat Viltrumites.
In Season 4, Episode 5, the reveal of Zoe’s identity occurs after she is recruited by Allen the Alien. She subsequently departs Earth to join Allen, Mark, and others dedicated to opposing the Viltrumites.
Reception to the Change
This alteration follows changes made in Season 4, Episode 4, which proved divisive among viewers, receiving a 6.8/10 on IMDb. However, Episode 5 has garnered a significantly higher score of 9.8/10, suggesting the Tech Jacket change has been well-received.
With Zoe and Allen separated from their allies after a fierce battle, their story is set to continue, potentially exploring the “exciting things” Kirkman alluded to. The season also hints at a possible connection developing between Zoe and Oliver.
Other heroes fighting alongside the Coalition of Planets in Invincible Season 4 include Omni-Man, Thaedus, Telia, Space Racer, and Battle Beast. Season 5 has already been renewed and recorded, ensuring Zoe’s continued involvement in the fight against the Viltrum Empire.
