Black Spark, a covert Russian resistance network, says it has been striking oil, rail and gas infrastructure since early 2024 to cripple President Vladimir Putin’s war machine. The group, headed publicly by former banking executive Igor Volobuev, operates from within Russia while coordinating with Ukrainian authorities.
Igor Volobuev’s defection and the Golden Cross award
Volobuev fled to Ukraine after the full‑scale invasion in 2022, took up arms and was later decorated with Ukraine’s Golden Cross by President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to the Daily Mail. He now fronts Black Spark, presenting the movement as a middle‑class uprising forced into violent resistance after peaceful attempts failed.
Railway sabotage worth up to $50 million since January
Black Spark claims to have damaged or destroyed several dozen locomotives and tank cars, estimating total losses at roughly $50 million. One high‑profile operation involved a remotely detonated charge that blew up a tanker carrying 73,000 liters of diesel in Krasnodar, a shipment destined for the Lukoil network.
Targeting the Trans‑Siberian and Kazakh‑border routes
The group says it set fire to a VL10 freight locomotive in Chelyabinsk, halting a convoy of engines, components and weapons bound for Orenburg, about 350 miles west. It also reports two explosions at Naberezhnye Chelny station that destroyed tank cars with 140 tons of specialized mineral oil, a key input for military prroduction.
Gas pipeline attacks near St Petersburg
Black Spark announced the destruction of two Gazprom pipelines – Belousovo‑Leningrad and Konnaya Lakhta – which supply energy to defence firms such as Severnaya Verf,Admiralty Shipyards and missile maker Almaz‑Antey. The claim underscores the group’s expansion beyond rail sabotage into energy infrastructure.
Who remains unknown and what is still unverified?
While Volobuev provides video evidence on the group’s Telegram channel, independent verification of the claimed damage remains limited. It is unclear how many of the reported attacks have been confirmed by Russian authorities, and the size of Black Spark’s clandestine network is still disputed.
According to the source, the FSB has launched nationwide searches but has yet to apprehend any operatives, leaving the true scale of the movement ambiguous.
