Influencer Admits to AI-Altered Photo After Backlash
Controversy Erupts Over Edited Image
Social media influencer Lauren Blake Boultier, who has over 1.6 million followers, is addressing accusations that she digitally altered her face onto the body of Black model Tatiana Elizabeth. The controversy began when Boultier shared a photo seemingly taken at the Miami Open last month.
Image Origins and Discrepancies
Users quickly noticed inconsistencies, pointing out the image actually originated from the US Open in New York City in September 2024. The original photo was posted by Tatiana Elizabeth, featuring Boultier’s face edited onto her body.
Boultier's Response and Apology
Boultier stated the issue stemmed from a third-party AI content agency she collaborates with. “I want to address a recent post created by a third-party AI content agency I’ve been working with,” she said in a statement posted on Wednesday. She added, “It was brought to my attention that an image posted utilized the work and likeness of a Black creator in a way that is entirely inconsistent with my values.”
Taking Responsibility
Boultier took “full responsibility for what appears on my platforms,” and confirmed she removed the post and privately apologized to Elizabeth. She also stated she will increase oversight of her agency’s work to ensure content integrity and respect moving forward, expressing deep regret for the harm caused.
Model Rejects Apology
Tatiana Elizabeth responded on TikTok, stating, “I don’t think it’s coming from a sincere place.” She believes Boultier’s apology is insincere and aimed at quickly resolving the situation. Elizabeth also expressed that she doesn’t believe Boultier was honest in her explanation.
Concerns About Representation
Elizabeth emphasized the historical pattern of Black women being copied and used for inspiration without receiving proper credit. “I’m working ten times as hard as a Black woman to be able to be in these spaces, and you get to just take that in an instant?” she questioned. She stated she does not condone online harassment but believes the backlash is a consequence of Boultier’s actions.
Growing Trend of AI-Altered Images
This incident highlights a growing trend of AI-generated and heavily edited content on platforms like Instagram and TikTok. The case underscores the ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI and the potential for misrepresentation and appropriation.
