The death toll from a train crash outside Jakarta, Indonesia, has risen to 14, according to Bobby Rasyidin, CEO of state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia.
Deadly Collision at Bekasi Timur Station
The tragic incident occurred on Monday when a long-distance train collided with the rear car of a stationary commuter train at Bekasi Timur Station, just outside Jakarta. The impacted car was a women-only compartment, a standard feature on Indonesian trains designed to enhance passenger safety and prevent harassment.
Rescue Efforts and Injuries
As of Tuesday morning, authorities confirmed 14 individuals had died, and their bodies were transported to a nearby hospital for identification. Rescue operations continued, with emergency crews working to free three passengers still trapped in the wreckage.
A total of 81 injured passengers were transported to hospitals for medical treatment. All 240 passengers aboard the Argo Bromo Anggrek long-distance train were accounted for and reported safe.
Investigation Launched
Police and transportation officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest a possible disruption in the rail system. Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri confirmed authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Rasyidin also revealed that a separate commuter train struck a stalled taxi at a nearby crossing, raising concerns about broader infrastructure issues. The National Transportation Safety Committee will conduct a detailed investigation.
Recurring Rail Safety Concerns
This event underscores the ongoing safety challenges facing Indonesia’s railway network. A similar collision in West Java province in January 2024 resulted in at least four fatalities, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades and improved safety protocols.
