Houston to Reconsider Street Name
The City of Houston is moving forward with a plan to rename Cesar Chavez Boulevard in light of recent public allegations of sexual abuse against the late labor leader Cesar Chavez. A 30-day public comment period will begin on April 1st, allowing residents to share their perspectives.
Allegations and Timeline
The push to remove Chavez’s name from the boulevard follows allegations that he groomed and sexually abused young girls, which were publicly revealed last month. The matter is scheduled for a vote by the City Council on May 13th, with a 30-day effective date if approved.
Local School District Response
The Houston Independent School District has already taken action, dropping “Cesar Chavez Day” and redesignating March 30th as Farmworkers Day. The district stated that any decision regarding renaming Chavez High School will follow its established formal process.
Implementation of Name Change
If the City Council approves the name change, the Houston Public Works department will begin installing new street signs between May 13th and June 12th. The city will also notify property owners and relevant agencies of the change.
