The prestigious James Beard Foundation has announced its list of finalists, highlighting significant achievements within the Houston culinary community. Four Houston-based entities have secured spots in nationwide categories, while two local chefs are competing for the title of Best Chef in Texas.

The competition for Best Chef in Texas features two prominent nominees from Houston. They join a competitive field that includes Scott Girling of Osteria Il Muro in Denton. These nominations underscore the city's ongoing influence on the state's diverse food landscape.

Southern Smoke Foundation Receives Impact Award

Beyond individual chef and restaurant honors, the James Beard Foundation presents Impact Awards. These accolades recognize organizations that advocate for equitable, sustainable, and economically viable standards within the food industry.

The Houston-based Southern Smoke Foundation has been named an Impact Award honoree. Established in 2017 by executive director Lindsey Brown and chef Chris Shepherd—a 2014 James Beard Award winner—the foundation provides critical support to food and beverage workers.

Foundation Achievements and Support

  • Emergency Relief: The foundation has granted more than $16 million to hospitality workers nationwide.
  • Mental Health Services: Through its 'Behind You' program, the organization has provided access to over 10,000 no-cost counseling sessions across 12 states and Washington, D.C.
