'Big Boy' 4014 Rolls Through Utah

Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014 stands apart from other trains; it is the world’s largest steam locomotive still in operation. The historic locomotive is currently traveling through Utah, offering a rare glimpse into America’s railroad past.

A Legacy of Power and Connection

Originally constructed in 1941, Big Boy 4014 was specifically designed to haul heavy loads across the challenging mountain terrain between Utah and Wyoming. This was during a crucial period, helping to support the nation’s efforts during wartime. After decades on display in a museum, Union Pacific Railroad undertook a meticulous restoration project.

Celebrating America's 250th Anniversary

The restoration wasn’t about returning Big Boy to service, but about connection. Union Pacific is bringing Big Boy back on the rails as part of its heritage program, coinciding with the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. The tour includes historic rail cars and commemorative locomotives, enhancing the experience at each stop.

The Emotional Impact of a Railroad Icon

Dickens, a member of the team supporting Big Boy 4014, expressed the profound impact of the locomotive’s journey. “It’s never really lost on you what it is,” he said. “We care for it.” He shared that working with Big Boy is a childhood dream come true, recalling dressing as a train engineer at age five.

Dickens described the emotional response from communities along the route. “It’s almost an emotional experience,” he stated. “You can feel the energy. When it rolls in, it’s beautiful.” He emphasized the vital role railroads played in building America, adding, “When you see this, it brings you back to what it was built for.”

Utah Stops and Schedule

Big Boy 4014 stopped at Salt Lake City’s Central Station at 3 p.m. before continuing its journey. It is scheduled to return for another stop at the Ogden Union Station on April 18.
