Hershey Reverts to Classic Reese's Recipe
The Hershey Company announced plans to return to traditional chocolate in select Reese’s products by 2027. This decision impacts less than 3% of the total Reese’s lineup and follows public criticism regarding ingredient changes.
Responding to Criticism
Hershey will phase out compound coatings, opting for traditional milk or dark chocolate in certain items. This adjustment also extends to a small portion of the broader Hershey’s product portfolio, according to reports from Bloomberg.
“bringing a small portion of remaining Hershey’s and Reese’s products in line with their classic milk and dark chocolate recipes,” a Hershey spokesperson stated in an email to FOX Business. The company emphasized that the core recipes for Hershey’s chocolate bars and standard Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups remain unchanged.
Grandson of Founder Voices Concerns
The change comes after Brad Reese, grandson of H.B. Reese, publicly criticized Hershey earlier this year. He accused the company of reducing ingredient quality in some products, stating, “I threw it in the garbage” in a February LinkedIn post.
Reese alleged that Hershey replaced traditional ingredients with cheaper alternatives. Despite the announced changes, Reese dismissed the move as “a PR move” and “total bunk,” questioning the 2027 timeline and suggesting it delays meaningful action. “They’re just hoping this will die down,” he told FOX Business.
Broader Product Updates
Hershey CEO Kirk Tanner stated the decision to adjust ingredients was made shortly after he assumed the role last summer. Beyond Reese’s, the company is also revising the Kit Kat recipe for a creamier chocolate taste.
Additionally, Hershey plans to eliminate artificial colors from its products by the end of 2027. These updates will apply to select items like the Reese’s Fast Break bar, some Mini Reese’s, and certain foil-wrapped products.
Family Response
Hershey addressed Reese’s criticism, noting his lack of official connection to the company. The company also shared a statement from other members of the Reese family distancing themselves from his remarks.
The Reese family stated, “Our family would like to make it clear that we have no involvement in, nor do we support, the recent claims made by Brad Reese… We continue to respect The Hershey Company.” They expressed belief that H.B. Reese would be proud of the brand’s current integrity.
