Commissioners Court Clash Over Judge Hidalgo's Rodeo Incident
Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey strongly condemned Judge Lina Hidalgo on Tuesday, asserting that her claims against the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo were "unfounded." This occurred during a notably tense session of the Harris County Commissioners Court meeting.
The confrontation follows a contentious March 10 event at NRG Stadium. During a sold-out concert, Judge Hidalgo alleged she faced mistreatment by rodeo security personnel.
Resolution Modified Amidst Controversy
A resolution addressing the rodeo situation was ultimately approved by the court. However, this passage followed a motion introduced by Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis and supported by Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones.
The modified resolution deliberately omitted the language that had called for Judge Hidalgo’s resignation. Instead, the focus shifted toward expressing greater appreciation for RodeoHouston.
Ramsey Defends Rodeo Against 'Unfounded Accusations'
Commissioner Ramsey argued that the rodeo organization had been insulted and disparaged by Hidalgo's public statements. He emphasized that such accusations against a historic organization should not be ignored or dismissed.
Ramsey stated, "The rodeo was insulted. The rodeo was disparaged." He pushed for the court to formally acknowledge that Hidalgo’s remarks were inappropriate.
He further highlighted the dedication of the rodeo’s volunteers and noted that the removal of Judge Hidalgo’s credentials was an unprecedented action. Ramsey revealed, "I spoke with rodeo officials to apologize for the judge’s behavior."
Debate Over Accountability and Focus
The debate saw sharp exchanges as Ramsey advocated for stronger language censuring Hidalgo’s comments. He felt the court needed to "set the record straight" regarding the incident.
Commissioner Lesley Briones supported the move to strike the resignation demand from the resolution. Following the procedural vote, Commissioner Ellis confirmed the passage of the item, noting two ayes and one nay.
The final, accepted resolution concentrated solely on recognizing and celebrating the significant contributions of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Background of the Dispute
The controversy originated when Judge Hidalgo claimed she was "manhandled" and threatened by security staff. This occurred after she was reportedly denied access to the dirt area near the stage due to credential verification issues.
Rodeo officials countered this account, maintaining that Hidalgo lacked the necessary chute seat wristbands. They stated she was repeatedly instructed to return to her designated suite.
Subsequent to the event, the rodeo’s executive committee voted to revoke Hidalgo’s ex-officio director status, stripping many associated privileges. This public feud has escalated, drawing in county leadership and resulting in statements and recordings released by both parties.
