The MV Hondius, a cruise ship carrying 140 passengers and crew, has arrived in Tenerife, Spain, following an outbreak of Hantavirus on board. The ship will not dock but remain anchored while passengers are evacuated in small boats.

Hantavirus Outbreak Details

Five passengers have tested positive for the virus, which can lead to life-threatening illness. Tragically, three individuals have died due to the infection. The virus identified is the Andes virus, which can spread between people but is not easily transmitted.

Evacuation and Safety Measures

All passengers, hailing from over 20 different nationalities, will be checked for symptoms before disembarking. Only those without symptoms will be allowed to leave the ship. Authorities have ensured that disembarking passengers will have no contact with the local population.

Monitoring and Response

The situation is being closely monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO), Spanish authorities, and the cruise company Oceanwide Expeditions. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, along with Spanish health and interior ministers, are supervising the response.
