Guardians Halt Dodgers' Perfect Opening Run
The Cleveland Guardians secured a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, successfully spoiling the Dodgers' perfect 3-0 start to the season. This perfect streak had been built entirely on rallies during their opening series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The key to Cleveland's win was a dominant performance from pitcher Parker Messick, who tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five batters. The Guardians also manufactured three crucial runs in the seventh inning to build an insurmountable lead.
Dodgers' Offense Stalls After Strong Start
The Dodgers, who had rallied successfully in all three prior games, found their offense largely dormant against the Guardians' pitching staff. Key players Shohei Ohtani, Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman combined for a meager 3-for-16 performance at the plate.
Los Angeles managed to score two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against closer Cade Smith, who struggled with control, issuing two wild pitches. Mookie Betts drove in one run with a double, and Freddie Freeman added another with a groundout, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
Early Lead and Seventh-Inning Breakthrough
Cleveland initially took a 1-0 lead when Steven Kwan hit an RBI double into the right field corner off Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki. Sasaki, one of three consecutive Japanese starters scheduled for the Dodgers in this series, struggled with command in his first outing since May 9.
The 24-year-old right-hander allowed one run and four hits over four innings, recording four strikeouts and two walks before being pulled after allowing a leadoff single in the fifth inning.
Guardians Break Open the Game
The Guardians extended their advantage significantly in the seventh inning, pushing the score to 4-0. Justin Wrobleski loaded the bases after allowing consecutive singles to Austin Hedges, Angel Martinez, and Steven Kwan.
With two outs, Wrobleski walked pinch-hitter Rhys Hoskins after falling behind 0-2, forcing in Hedges for the first run allowed by the Dodgers' bullpen this season. Daniel Schneemann followed with a decisive two-run double, sealing the scoring for Cleveland.
Milestone for José Ramírez
Third baseman José Ramírez went 1-for-5 in the contest. This appearance marked his 1,614th game played for Cleveland, tying him with Nap Lajoie for second place on the franchise's all-time list.
Ramírez is now positioned to potentially surpass Terry Turner, who played in 1,619 games, later this weekend when the team plays at home.
Looking Ahead
The series continues Tuesday with Cleveland's RHP Tanner Bibee scheduled to pitch against Shohei Ohtani, who will be making his season debut on the mound for the Dodgers.
