Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who is also a Republican candidate for California governor, has temporarily suspended his ongoing investigation into election materials. This decision follows the initiation of legal challenges by both Democratic Attorney General Rob Bonta and the UCLA Voting Rights Project last week.
Legal Challenges Force Investigation Halt
Sheriff Bianco stated in a Saturday announcement that his office paused the probe due to what he termed "politically motivated lawsuits and court filings." This reversal comes after significant legal pressure arguing that the sheriff lacks the proper authority over official election documentation.
Dispute Over Ballot Seizures
The core of the controversy involves the seizure of election materials. Bianco previously asserted that his investigation, which included seizing over 650,000 ballots from the November election, was legally sound and authorized by a Riverside County judge.
Last week, Bianco escalated the situation by taking additional ballots from a county election office, defying direct orders issued by Attorney General Bonta’s office to cease the action. The seizure began in February following a complaint from a local citizens group regarding the ballot count from a November 2025 special election on redistricting.
Official Response and Court Actions
Local election officials had previously informed the county Board of Supervisors that the citizens group's complaint was unfounded. After Bonta ordered Bianco to stop, the sheriff seized another 426 boxes of ballots.
Bonta’s office confirmed on Monday that it intends to proceed with its legal petitions in both the California Supreme Court and the superior court. Similarly, the UCLA Voting Rights Project filed a petition on Monday on behalf of several Riverside County voters.
Voters Seek Ballot Return
The UCLA group is specifically asking the state Supreme Court to mandate that Bianco return the seized ballots while the legal proceedings continue. Sonni Waknin, an attorney with the group, emphasized the legal clarity of the situation.
"Our election law is clear that voted ballots are to remain in the custody of election officials, and nothing the sheriff has presented changes that basic rule," Waknin stated.
Context of National Election Rhetoric
This local dispute unfolds against a backdrop of national election skepticism. The investigation mirrors actions taken by President Donald Trump, who has frequently disputed the 2020 election results citing unsubstantiated fraud claims. His administration recently seized ballots and documents in Georgia, and some Republican figures in various states have adopted similar rhetoric regarding voting integrity.
