Partial Government Shutdown: Benson Points to Democratic Politics

Political commentator Guy Benson believes the current partial government shutdown stems from “internal politics” within the Democratic party. He argues that Democrats are motivated by a desire to “posture” opposition to President Biden’s policies.

Blame Game and Narrative Control

Benson stated on Fox Business’s “Varney & Co.” that the record-breaking government shutdown last year, and the current one, are both attributable to Democratic actions. He explained that both chambers of Congress adjourning created an opportunity for Democrats to shift blame.

“That narrative could have been avoided if the Republicans, yes, gritted their teeth,” Benson said. “I know it’s not fun, but it’s the job to stay here.” He believes remaining in Washington D.C. would have prevented the Democrats from successfully framing the situation as a Republican failure to agree.

Impact on Homeland Security

The shutdown is impacting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Benson highlighted that the issue extends beyond Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), emphasizing the importance of enforcing existing laws. He criticized “sanctuary politicians” for allegedly aiding individuals who have committed crimes.

Benson also pointed to Democratic objections to funding for Border Patrol along the southern border, questioning the rationale behind this decision. “What is that about?” he asked.
