Google AI Plus subscribers lose access to Gemini Pro models as subscription tiers are reshuffled Google has updated its AI subscription plans, removing access to the high-performance Gemini Pro model from the entry-level AI Plus tier. Subscribers are now limited to the lower-tier Flash and Flash-Lite models, causing significant dissatisfaction among users who valued the Pro model's capabilities. The company has also adjusted model access for free users, implementing an 'Auto' setting that restricts manual selection of the Pro model. We've seen Google push a lot of its AI features behind paid subscriptions over the past couple of years, and there are already a fewthat you can only use if you're paying for one of its Google AI plans. However, Google is now pulling back on some of what those subscriptions include, and the people paying for its cheapest plan, Google AI Plus, are the ones who are losing the most. The company has changed which Gemini models each plan can use, and if you're paying for Plus, you'll soon lose access to Gemini's Pro model.Gemini Models Restricted for SubscribersInstead, AI Plus subscribers will be limited to Google's lower-tier Flash and Flash-Lite models, while the Pro model will only be available to those paying for AI Pro or AI Ultra. Free users are losing some access, too, as Gemini will now default to an Auto setting that sends most prompts to Flash-Lite. The system can still detect when it needs another model, but free users won't have any control over when that is themselves. These changes started rolling out to free users on October 9, and Google says AI Plus subscribers should receive an email that tells them when the change will affect their account. AI Plus only costs $4.99 a month, so it was always positioned as more limited than Google's other plan options.Subscribers Frustrated by Pro Access RemovalStill, losing all access to Pro models is a pretty big change that is leaving some people wonderingGoogle's decision to pull Pro from AI Plus hasn't gone over very well with some subscribers, and there has been a lot of frustration from users in the Gemini community on Reddit since the news first broke. In one thread on r/GeminiAI, a longtime Gemini user shared that they were planning to move over to Claude and DeepSeek instead, while others pointed out that the only way to keep using Pro now is to upgrade to a more expensive plan.Others have even said having access to Gemini Pro was the only thing that made AI Plus even worth it for them.. While others have pointed out that Flash is usually enough for most things, it doesn't lessen the blow for everyone. We're still talking about people who have put their money on the line to get access to a subscription that has now effectively become nerfed to not even be able to access Pro.Meanwhile, Free will continue to be able to access Pro-but only when Gemini thinks it is needed. Determining whether or not AI Plus is still worth it is another question altogether. AI Plus does still offer some value, especially if you're mostly using it for storage.Evaluating AI Plus Value and StorageHowever, it is worth keeping in mind that Google cut the price of AI Plus from $7.99 to $4.99 back in June, while also doubling the included storage to 400GB. AI Plus also includes twice the usage limits of the free tier, so it might still be useful if you use Gemini a lot for basic everyday tasks. But if you subscribed specifically for Pro access at a lower cost, then the plan is likely not going to hold the same value anymore-even if you do use the included Google Drive storage that it offers. Still, it's worth considering all the, especially those you might not always think about. And then, if you still want to cancel, just make sure you're emptied out any extra storage that might not fit in Drive's default space.
