Gonzaga Remains in Pursuit of No. 1 Recruit
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are actively pursuing Tyran Stokes, the consensus No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2026 class, as he nears a decision on his college basketball future. Despite earlier reports suggesting Gonzaga was no longer a contender, the coaching staff is reportedly still in the running.
Initial Challenges and Shifting Landscape
Gonzaga initially showed interest in the 6'7" wing last summer, attempting to schedule an official visit. However, plans fell through, and Stokes later announced a top three of Kentucky, Kansas, and Oregon. A recent transfer to Rainier Beach High School in Seattle has shifted the recruiting landscape, improving Gonzaga and Washington’s positions.
Kansas Remains a Strong Contender
Wednesday’s announcement that Bill Self will return as head coach at Kansas likely solidifies the Jayhawks as the current frontrunner. However, Gonzaga’s continued pursuit demonstrates their commitment to assembling a top-tier recruiting class.
Stokes' Profile: A Unique Talent
Tyran Stokes is a physically imposing player at 6'7" and 230 pounds, boasting a 7'0" wingspan. He possesses a unique combination of size, strength, and guard-like skills, excelling in shot creation, scoring, and facilitation. While his outside shot is a question mark, his 36% shooting percentage is respectable.
Potential Impact on Gonzaga
Adding Stokes would instantly elevate Gonzaga’s ceiling, complementing existing commitments from guards Jack Kayil, wing Luca Foster, and center Sam Funches. Gonzaga’s current recruiting class is already highly rated, and Stokes could make it truly transformational as the program transitions into the evolving Pac-12 conference in 2026-27.
Historical Context: Gonzaga and Top Recruits
Gonzaga has only seen three 5-star recruits in its history: Chet Holmgren, Jalen Suggs, and Hunter Sallis. Holmgren is the only Zag commit to be ranked No. 1 in his class, meaning Stokes would join elite company should he choose Gonzaga. Stokes’ previous school changes have raised some questions, but his potential impact on Gonzaga’s high-octane offense is undeniable.
