Gmail Introduces Username Change Feature for US Users
Gmail users in the United States are finally receiving the long-awaited option to modify the username portion of their email address. This change, which begins rolling out starting Tuesday, allows users to correct embarrassing handles chosen years ago.
As reported by Android Authority, the ability to alter the part of the address preceding "@gmail.com" is now available to all Google Account holders in the US. This update follows a gradual rollout that began last year.
Important Rules for Changing Your Gmail Address
Users must exercise caution when selecting a new address, as the feature imposes strict limitations. You are permitted to create only one new email address every twelve months.
Furthermore, any new username chosen cannot subsequently be utilized for a separate Google Account. This restriction ensures the primary account linkage remains intact.
Preserving Old Communications
A key benefit of this update is that your previous Gmail username will not be deleted. It will remain actively connected to your account as an alternate address.
This means any emails directed to your old address will successfully continue to arrive in your updated inbox. This continuity is vital for maintaining professional and personal correspondence.
Practical Applications Beyond Correction
While fixing old mistakes is a primary driver, the feature also serves practical administrative needs. It can be particularly useful for updating an email address following a legal name change.
However, users must remember a crucial post-change step. You may need to manually update your new email address across all external apps and websites where you currently use it for sign-in credentials.
How to Access the New Setting
To utilize this new functionality, users should navigate through their Google Account settings. Start by opening the Gmail application and tapping your profile icon.
From there, select "Manage your Google Account," then navigate to "Personal info," and finally choose the "Email" option within that menu. If the feature is available, you should see an arrow next to your current email address.
Tapping this arrow reveals the option to "Change Google Account email." Note that if you have recently modified your username, this option may temporarily not appear.
