The San Francisco Giants secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night, marking the first Major League Baseball win for rookie manager Tony Vitello. This win followed a difficult start to the season for the Giants.

Bader's Homer Breaks Giants' Slump

First Home Run of the Season

San Francisco's offense finally broke through when Harrison Bader connected against Padres starter Walker Buehler. Bader hit the Giants' first home run of the season, driving a pitch off the facade of the second deck in left field.

The blast occurred leading off the third inning. San Francisco extended their lead in the fourth inning with consecutive RBI singles coming from Patrick Bailey and Casey Schmitt.

Vitello's Rocky Start Ends

Vitello, who was hired directly from the University of Tennessee without prior professional playing or coaching experience, had overseen a tough opening series. The Giants were swept by the New York Yankees, being outscored 13-1 across three games.

The team matched a franchise record by going 20 innings without scoring to begin the year. They finally registered a run in the third inning of a 3-1 loss before Monday's victory.

Pitching Duel and Late Drama

Giants Pitching Holds Strong

Giants starter Landen Roupp delivered a strong performance over six innings. He allowed just two singles while striking out seven batters and walking two.

Closer Ryan Walker entered the ninth inning needing just one out to secure a combined two-hit shutout. However, he surrendered a two-run home run to Jackson Merrill.

Walker managed to recover, getting Xander Bogaerts to ground out to end the game. The final result was a combined three-hitter for the Giants, securing the save for Walker.

Buehler's Padres Debut

Walker Buehler, the 31-year-old pitcher, made his debut for the San Diego Padres after spending his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched for Boston and Philadelphia last season before signing with San Diego in the spring.

Buehler is returning to the NL West following elbow surgery. The Padres rotation is currently missing Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove, who is on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation following a slow recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Buehler finished his outing allowing three runs and five hits over four innings.

Looking Ahead

The series continues Tuesday night. Giants right-hander Logan Webb is scheduled to face Padres right-hander Germán Márquez. This matchup will mark Márquez's first appearance with the San Diego club.
