A devastating incident unfolded in Germany on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a ten-month-old baby girl. The tragedy occurred during an Easter egg hunt held in a wooded area near the town of Satrupholm.
Easter Egg Hunt Turns Tragic
Approximately fifty people were participating in the event, all residents and staff from a nearby residential facility supporting new mothers, pregnant women, and their children. The facility operates as part of the state-funded child welfare system, providing vital assistance to families in need.
High Winds Contribute to Fatal Accident
Around 11 a.m. local time, a large tree, estimated to be 100 feet tall, was uprooted by strong winds and fell onto the group. Emergency services responded immediately to the scene, finding four people trapped under the tree.
Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Despite the efforts of first responders, a 21-year-old woman and a 16-year-old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. The 21-year-old woman’s ten-month-old daughter, who was critically injured, later died in the hospital. An 18-year-old woman was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
Community Support and Official Response
Grief counselors were deployed to provide emotional support to survivors and witnesses. Photographs from the scene showed scattered Easter eggs amidst the devastation, with some victims covered by white sheets.
Weather Warnings Issued
The German weather service had previously issued a warning for high winds in the area. Officials from the Schleswig-Holstein region, including Regional Governor Daniel Günther, Interior Minister Magdalena Finke, and Youth and Families Minister Aminata Touré, released a joint statement expressing their condolences to the families and those affected.
The statement, released to the dpa news agency, conveyed the community’s collective grief and the government’s commitment to providing support. The focus now is on supporting the families, investigating the incident, and aiding in the community’s recovery.
