As the Georgia Bulldogs prepare for the 2026 season with aspirations for the College Football Playoff, several roster changes are underway. Among the most noticeable adjustments for fans is the decision by several key players to switch their jersey numbers.

Chauncey Bowens Honors a Georgia Icon

Running back Chauncey Bowens is one of the notable players making a switch. Bowens will now wear jersey number five, moving away from his previous number 33. This decision was made to pay tribute to a celebrated figure in Georgia football history.

The Connection to Garrison Hearst

Bowens recently confirmed that his new number honors former Bulldogs running back Garrison Hearst, who starred for the team in the early 1990s. Bowens explained the personal connection that inspired the change.

"It was kind of just a number that I had been eyeing for a while, and I actually lived with Garrison Hearst's son, Gannon and we had a really good relationship," Bowens stated. He added, "I asked him 'What would you think if I switched to five and wore your dad's number?' and he thought it would be cool."

Hearst's Legacy at Georgia

Garrison Hearst left an indelible mark on the University of Georgia program. During his tenure, Hearst amassed over 3,000 rushing yards and scored more than 30 touchdowns. His exceptional 1992 campaign saw him place third in the Heisman Trophy voting.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season

Bowens is positioned to take on an even larger role in the Bulldogs' offense this coming year. Last season, he contributed six touchdowns and rushed for over 500 yards.

When a current player chooses to honor a program legend, it generates significant excitement among the fanbase. It also underscores the deep sense of pride players feel representing the University of Georgia.

If Bowens can replicate some of Hearst's success on the field, Georgia could field one of the nation's most formidable rushing attacks. The Bulldogs are scheduled to kick off their 2026 campaign on Saturday, September 5th, hosting Tennessee State.

Under Head Coach Kirby Smart, the Bulldogs maintain an undefeated record in season openers.
