Recent Israeli fire in Gaza has resulted in two Palestinian deaths, increasing the total fatalities since October 2023 to 72,612, according to the Health Ministry.
Rising Death Toll and Injuries
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine continues to claim lives in Gaza, with the Health Ministry reporting two additional Palestinian fatalities in the last 24 hours. This brings the total number of deaths since the commencement of Israel’s military operations in Gaza in October 2023 to 72,612.
The ministry’s statement, released on Monday, did not provide specific details regarding the circumstances of these latest deaths. However, a medical source told Anadolu news agency that one of the victims was a 44-year-old man killed by Israeli fire in the Atatra area, west of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, during the early hours of Monday.
Local sources indicate that the Atatra area falls outside the designated zones of Israeli military presence and control as defined by the existing ceasefire agreement. Details surrounding the second fatality remain unknown.
In addition to the fatalities, the Health Ministry reported nine individuals sustained injuries due to Israeli fire over the past day, pushing the cumulative number of injuries since October 2023 to 172,457. This places a significant burden on Gaza’s overwhelmed healthcare system.
Continued Military Activity
Witnesses reported that Israeli artillery engaged in shelling of eastern neighbourhoods within Gaza City at dawn. Simultaneously, Israeli naval forces directed gunfire and shells towards the coastal regions of Rafah and Khan Younis, both located in the southern part of Gaza.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported as a direct result of these attacks, but the continued bombardment contributes to the pervasive atmosphere of fear and instability experienced by the civilian population.
Ceasefire Challenges
The ceasefire, reached after a prolonged and devastating period of intense Israeli military action that began on October 8, 2023, had offered a fragile respite. However, the recent incidents suggest that this respite is increasingly tenuous.
Approximately 90% of civilian infrastructure in Gaza was severely damaged or destroyed during the initial phase of the conflict, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of Gazans.
Since the implementation of the ceasefire on October 10, 2025, at least 830 Palestinians have been killed and 2,345 others injured as a result of Israeli attacks, highlighting the challenges in maintaining peace and security.
The ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for a sustainable and comprehensive resolution to the conflict. Access to essential services, such as healthcare, water, and electricity, remains severely limited, exacerbating the suffering of the civilian population. International organizations are struggling to provide adequate assistance.
